Voice therapy employs a variety of exercises and techniques to alter the biomechanics of voice production in order to aid in the healing of vocal fold wounds or to allow your vocal folds to vibrate without overpressure. Your speech therapist will teach you how to allow your voice to flow out on exhaled air and be shaped — and sensed — in the resonating cavities of the mouth, nose, facial, and skull bones during voice therapy. Certain bodily sensations are associated with normal vocal fold vibration. A major goal of voice therapy is to recognize and guide these sensations in everyday speech and singing. There are numerous exercises you can do to regain vocal strength, flexibility, and stamina once any underlying respiratory and laryngeal motor issues have improved. Most vocal exercises are designed to direct vocal tension away from the throat by developing or improving awareness.
